Last time the mountain burned would have been probably 75 years ago. I am 60 and have never seen it burn other than a very small area that started when some kids had fire crackers throwing them off the cliffs at the summit. It was extinguished in short order by local volunteer fire department . The mountain was privately owned until the late 1960's when the state bought it to become a state park. Probably in the 1920's, the private owners built a road to the summit and built a set of wooden steps on the side of the big pinnacle that allowed access to the very top of the mountain. It was a tourist attraction/money making thing for the owners. I remember my father telling that when he was a child in the 1920's that the mountain was burned every few years, whether intentionally by the owners or by arsonists. I was talking with a friend Friday and he said an old fellow he knew said that the owners burned it every few years on Easter weekend.
