Subject: Wildfire in N.C. State Park. Ooops !

nw NC
If any of you have been in this area of northwestern North Carolina you have seen a prominent landmark rising above the surrounding countryside. It is Pilot Mountain. It is a State Park in eastern Surry County , N. C. I live about 5 miles southeast of the mountain . Our illustrious officials in the Division of Parks along with the state Forest Service decided that a " controlled " burn in an area of the park would be of benefit to ecosystem and visitors hiking along trails on the mountain . So, on Thursday of this week, they set fire to it. It has been very dry for the last month or more, the leaves have fallen from trees, it was a bright sunny day with humidity 20% and winds gusting to 20 mph. Need I say more? Ooops !!!!! Pictures below. 1. What we see every day. 2-3 What it looked like Friday afternoon.

What was intended to be a " controlled burn " of about 180 acres has now burned over 700 acres and expected to be about 1000 or more. The entire side of the mountain facing the camera burned Friday and through the night. It has gone around the right side of the mountain and is burning its way around the other side.
