| Side-by-side studies are based on the premise that you can't tell farmers anything - you have to show them on their farm in their fields and with their "management practives". Whatever you do, they'll do differently (on 20 acres) - you do 125# total, split 75 & 50, they'll do 75# total split 25 & 50 AND pay you for the difference in yields if there are any. You have to supply them with GPS referenced yield data because the 20 acre test is stripped to match your header width. You get multiple full field strips which lets them (and you) look at spacial variability as well as individual strip averages. Plot sizes are typically 20 acres. You get to chose the question to be answered if you want - rate with or without a manure base, Fall application vs Spring, pre-plant vs side-dress, anhydrous vs liquid, etc. If you want to do more sophisticated studies such as nitrogen availability in no-tilled fields the second year after manure application, they are up for that too. They have done hundreds (thousands probably) of studies across the state over the last 5 years.
Lots of data to mine and no industry bias. The results are not always what is expected or what is being preached by either the "guru's" or the "regulators".
Summary data should be on their web site but they keep playing with their site so you may have to do a bit of digging. Best place to learn is to go to their Feb Conference on this topic. | |
