It would be similar to growing them hydroponically, meaning that you will have to provide all 16 elemental nutrients. A PITA in itself. Sticking them in the ground seems a lot simplier to me. Use black or red plastic ground cover if weeds are a problem or you need more heat units to get the tomatoes to ripen. My brother is trying to grow tomatoes in suspended buckets with the plants coming out of the bottom. That makes staking the tomatoes a none issue, but here again it seems more trouble than it is worth. Just a fun project I guess.
