Subject: RE: Variable rate N

We would if I was smart enough. VR technology is great for doing strip trials (because you dial in rate) which then teach me how little I really know. Last year we did 75# of spring applied anhydrous NH3 following 40 bpa soybeans in very sandy soil and got 175 bpa. 125# gave us 180 bpa. Did we mine organic matter or did the beans produce more useable nitrogen that 1#/bu or do we have some anaerobic bacterial that are synthesizing nitrate?

If anyone has a formula that can predict rainfall during the growing season and can keep late season stalk nitrate less than 1000 ppm but above 400 ppm, I'll kiss their feet and find somebody to pay them a lot of money.

If you have protein levels in corn that vary spatially across a single field from 7.5 to 9.5%, how much does that change your nitrogen take off rate?

Swine breeders rate pig lines on protein utilization effoiciency? Are there differences between hybrids in nitrate utilization efficiency?
