I'm really ignorant of the differences between a 540 and 1000 rpm shaft and their applications. What would you guys rather have on a batwing mower and why.

Thanks,
Eric

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think 1000 rpm equipment is used to reduce the torque that is transmitted to the implement from the tractor. They are generally used on equipment that is intended to be used on high horsepower tractors to keep from tearing up gearboxes and other PTO driven parts. I would say that it would depend on the size of tractor that you will be using. If it is a higher HP tractor then you would want a 1000 rpm mower. If you are using a smaller tractor you would want a 540 rpm.

It depends on the horsepower of the tractor and size of the implement. Horsepower is a factor of torque multiplied by speed. With X amount of torque on the shaft, if it is turning 1000 rpm it is transmitting nearly double the horsepower of 540 rpm. 100 horsepower is about the practical limit for 540 rpm. On many implements where they offer both, the 1000 rpm drivelines are sized smaller, yet still transmit as much power as the 540 drivelines, because they are turning faster, and have more gear reduction at the implement gearbox. On a rotary cutter the blades will turn about the same speed, with either a 540 or 1000 driveline, because the gearboxes are geared different. What size tractor and cutter are you talking about, and what are you cutting?

pastures mainly - sometimes they get away from us depending on what else is going on but not heavy duty mowing. It would typically be behind a 100 hp or less tractor. Is there anything to the story of 1000 rpm shafts being tougher on u-joints, tractor guts, etc... when turning?

540 should be ok with under 100 hp. I like a cv driveline for turning. The hardest thing on a batwing is hitting the ground going over the crest of a hill or uneven ground. I like to run the front a little higher than the rear, because of the length from the hitch to the rear wheels.

I bought a new Woods batwing last year in Georgia from here: http://www.gadeerfarm.com/default.htm They had some carryover models from the year before, and very good prices. Well worth my drive from NC.

Do you have other implements with pto's ? I would get whatever matched them so you would not have to change them much.

Just keep in mind that cv shafts are a pain to hook/unhook if you plan to do that much, and they can twist 540 tractor shafts when turning under load.

Personally I'd try to stay away from a CV joint because of cost and go with a regular u-joint. However, its either me or my son on the shredder so we just turn wide and never have an issue. Put a driver on it and let him keep turning sharp and he'll have problems with a regular one.

Smaller shafts can be used to transmit the same HP @ Higher RPM -- There was some formula (I've long forgotten it) that went through this --

As stated above, get whatever matches your tractors best. My first Bush Hog batwing had a 540--no problems, The Bush Hog I am running now is identical, only 1000 RPM. Did this so we could use it on different tractors (some with only 1000) I mow a lot of road ditches, and I really LIKE the CV joints. They run much smoother when turning. I know they are more expensive to replace, if you have to replace them, but my mower is 6 years old, and has mowed hundreds of miles of ditches, and I have yet to replace one.

If you are going to be hooking and unhooking it a lot I would avoid the CV joints. They weigh a ton and are a pain to get on and off by yourself. If you are young and strong they may be alright for you.
