Kinda like that, but not in the clostridial or acidosis type of overeating you may be more familiar with.

As I understand it, some strains of broiler chickens have been bred to grow so fast, they outgrow the capacity of their organs to support them, if you feed them ad-lib. They die of a heart attack or stroke due to the stress on their organs. By restricting their intake, you artificially slow down their growth rate.

The hatchery I bought my chickens from strongly suggests that you restrict their feed intake to around 12hrs per day. I feed around 7am and only give them enough feed to last until early evening. Overnight, they have water, but no feed.

Watching the little buggers, I'd bet they would find a way to stuff themselves 24hrs a day, they seem to have only three modes; eat, drink, sleep. They don't walk around much, just eat until their crops are full, stagger over to drink, then plop down to rest until the food works it's way out of the crop. Repeat previous activities......
