I agree with your assessment that it is our responsibility to protect the neighbor's side from our drift. That is one really good reason for a headland. But, 50' won't be enough when some spray in a 30mph wind, you actually have to come back and hit it when the wind is in your favor. many, not all, refuse to do this.

I have one neighbor who farms right up to the property line (and my headland). In our hills the conservation plans we all produced many years ago called for those headlands but this new owner apparently wanted every inch to generate income. Anyhow, his main operator who also is running his sprayer has been fantastic to work with and has never put a drop over on me that I have ever seen, so drift control can be accomplished, you just have to be willing to attempt it.
