God's Country, Iowa | What is the difference between the Super M and a regular M?

Elizabethtown,KY | The M has a 248 cu. inch engine, the Super M has a 264 cu. in. engine, Super has disk brakes, 4th gear is faster and possibly some of the others, these are a few things, there are more that I can't recall at the moment.

Oregon | And... Supers have different lights- thinner (Lights and breaks are the fast and easy way to tell Supers apart from non-Supers) Late Supers had live hydraulic option.

I would rather have a regular M then a super M any day. For one thing those disc brakes are worse to run then then the old drum brakes. Not one off IHs better ideas an the gearing in the old M is better then the Super. Id take a SMTA at least you had live power on the PTO. The Super M waqs IHs answer to JDs 60 which was very popular at the time Edited by farmdude 6/2/2012 23:04

NW Washington | A lot of folks put the thin walled over sized M&W sleeves and pistons in Farmall M's which increase the bore by 1/8" and gave them the power of a Super M. M&W sold these thin walled over sized sleeve and piston sets for several brands of tractors in this era. Seems like the Super M had improved hydraulics too. The hydraulic system on an M was basically just good for raising the mounted cultivators.

Talking about the disc brake's, I once bought a kit of part's to convert my H to disk brake's. A mechanic friend told me that when IH came out with the disk brake's they advertized them as being an improvement over the drum and band brake's that didn't hold as well going up a hill as going down. IH said they finally had a brake that would hold the same forward and backward's. The mechanic said they were right, the disc brake's wouldn't hold either way. I sold the kit.

I grew up runnning Ms & SMs & have both today, plus a SMTA. I'd take a S M over the M any day of the week. FWIW, some of the very last Ms came out of the factory with disc brakes. The SMs also had live hyds and the Msused a belly pump & didn't. The SM could be ordered with a belly pump, or even as a "hyd delete". Many M owners updated their tractors to live hyds. As mentioned the M had 3 7/8" pistons compared to the SM's 4". M could be changed to 4" and the SM to 4 1/8" using a thin wall sleeve as mentioned. I know of a couple Ms that were increased to 4 1/8" by doing a way with the sleeves but that was considered the "final overhaul".
