My ideas:
mainly genetics and it is expensive and time consuming to breed that out of them, in nature the open rapidly to reproduce themselves

moisture, too dry, too wet, too dry to fast, drought, can encourage those genetics to sow their seed

Harvest equipment, I see huge differences in farmers ability adapt and use a machine for minimum shatter, many bushels per acre difference but we are better now than we ever have been...

I always started harvest early because I detest harvest loss of any kind...
