Mississippi

There's at least one county in the Mississippi Delta that has a population (people per square mile) that would meet the criteria of "frontier" status that the census bureau once used. It's criteria is 6 people per square mile. At least one Mississippi Delta county is now at 5.5. There are other things that fit into the definition of "frontier," like distance to the nearest medical facility and status of roads. But population is the first thing that seems to be considered.

It's not just that there are fewer people, what you're left with are often the older people. Baptist Churches that had thriving Sunday Schools 40 years ago with lots of kids of all ages now don't have any kids or not enough to scrap together any kind of program.

I can sort of judge the viability of a Southern town by whether any of the mainline churches have made additions to their facilities within the last 10 years.
