Here are some pic's of when Farmall was developing the M Farmall, My Dad bought one of the last F-20's in the Fall of 1939, some of the early M's were out then too. Interesting how they changed around with the numbering/lettering of the new tractor. They decided to go with the lettering system, as that what JD and some other competitors had. Front wheels, 4 spoke, 3 spoke, engine cover or not, (read in Oliver) what type of steering wheel, and the list goes on for what they decided on. Enjoy the pic's. central - east central Minnesota - | Thanks for sharing Surbo ! Those are great pic's . . . . . 73 yrs ago, that was a BIG tractor. 80 acres was a large farm and 160 was huge - and many tractors of that vintage, did the work.

West Central Wisconsin | Great photos! Interesting to see how much more physical jobs were back then. OSHA would have a field day there now-a-days, especially with the painter not wearing a mask. Joe

Sac & Story county IA | I watched something on PBS last night about the new car factories. They sure don't look anything like that factory. Very little labor.

Central Nebraska | Very cool! Dad and I have two Farmall M's. Both are wide fronts and I believe from the 1947-50 vintage. We use them on a regular basis for running augers and pulling pipe trailers. Other than an occasional issue with the starter locking up they are reliable. We just make sure to have a 3/4' wrench in the toolbox to take the starter off to free it up. I often look at the tractors and wish I was more mechanically inclined than I am. I'd love to restore them sometime.

I had a Super M. IIRC a 1954 model. Sold it to a neighbor who has an older SM. Mine had a Schwartz wide front which uses the OEM hubs and wheels. Neighbor's has a SpeeCo wide front which uses standard 6 bolt hubs and ag wheels. He has 9.5x15 implement tires on that one. Both are loader tractors and don't get used much anymore. TX - WY - NM | The rail yard picture might be from the WW II years as the crawlers have USA stenciled on the hoods. Tracks have the rubber grousers which was common on the artillery prime movers.

For anybody that's interested in more detail, these are covered in more depth in this book. I didn't realize it was out of print, you might have to do some looking for used, but it's a great book for an IH buff. http://www.amazon.com/International-Harvester-Experimental-Prototyp... Interstate 35 North ia | Had a H years ago that would lock the starter once in a while , I could put it in 5th gear then get off and grab one back tire and rock it back and forth a little and you would hear a pop and starter was good to go .

Chebanse, IL..... | Of course, FIRST you made sure the ignition switch was OFF....right? I suspect that's what we're recommending for others to try anyway.
