I would be very cautious of the GPS 18 from Garmin. It runs on 5 volts instead of 12, and the slightest voltage spike will destroy the unit. There is no voltage protection in the circuit.
We have seen much better results from the GPS 17HVS, as it was originally designed by Garmin for marine use and is extremely rugged.
