Subject: Lets talk about ROLLING beans!!

I noticed the local CASE IH dealer has a 40ft roller in there lot. There has been some local talk about rolling beans to get a flatter surface to combine over and ALSO push those rotor destroying fist size rocks into the ground. One guy says 5 bu better soybeans because he can cut so much closer. 5 bu was a little hard to swallow but 2 bu seem like a reasonable figure.
I was thinking about rolling a field that I rented this year that the landlord had plowed last fall. The ground was really loose and i have all this dips and valleys from the dead furrows, drill, and fertilizer spreading. I worked the ground once at a pretty good angle and should have gone the other way too.
Soys are just starting the first trifoliate. What time of the day works best for rolling?? What stage is best for rolling??
Any experiences with rolling would be appreciated.
