Anything with tapered spline can be a real bear. Who knew, even ten years ago, that we would be swapping steering wheels out to make stuff drive straight!! Certainly the factory didn't!! The knee trick works pretty good for most situations but I have had to use a puller on a few occasions. If you use your knees and a hammer, I usually keep the nut on and use a spacer (from a JD PF90420 kit) or use a second hammer to put on the nut. I just try to not have the hammer doing the work from making the direct hit on the steering shaft as I really don't feel like replacing a steering shaft. As for performance, it will work well on both machines you have have.
