Subject: Re: Are cutworms green?

Here's another cutworm site http://www.ipm.uiuc.edu/fieldcrops/insects/black_cutworm/index.html They will get to 1 1/2 inches long, at that time they're usually nearly done. There is a varigated cutworm and dusky cutworm. The black is predominate and causes the most trouble. If the plants are cut above the growing point of the plant (located just above the "node" you talk about), they will ususally come back, but they're set back and don't have the leaf area of the uncut plants. If you have 3% or more cut plants, and worms are present, you have a treatable situation. Look close, they can be little bitty buggers to find when they're just starting

Not sure about the ugly green thing you've found. could be Armyworm, they're kinda greenish, but ususally later season and found in wheat fields, or corn fields planted in cover crops like rye. That site has some pix of them too.

Hope this helps, good luck.
