Subject: Are cutworms green?

Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577

It appears we have some cutworms in corn--------corn is about 3 inches tall, and being cut off just below soil surface, but just above the node which is above the seed.  Some of the leaves have holes in them also.

Found only one worm, but damage is obvious.  Did not notice the damage two days ago.

Some of the plants that have been cut are withering.

1.   I thought that at this stage, if the plant were cut above the node, that it would come back------am I correct?

2.  What worm would it be.......in south central Iowa.........that is about 1.5 inches long, greenish, with about 8 legs..............the boy is NOT cute.  I don't see anything on Iowa State about cutworms, other than black cutworms, and they say those do not get bigger than about one-half inch, and that the black ones are about the only ones in Iowa that do any damage.  Descriptions elsewhere just refer to "cutworms".

We have not had any major insect damage for the last two years.  This field had soybeans in it last year-------and a lot of weeds.

Thanks for your comments.
