Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | Matts,I suspect that using E 85 in that mower engine would gain you nothing. A modern car engine can adjust the fuel and ignition system to take advantage of the very high octane of E 85 fuel,so the drop in fuel economy is not nearly as great as the 25% less BTU of E 85 compared to gasoline.
That mower engine has the fuel and ignition settings locked at what would be correct for low octane gasoline, and can not adjust itself for the high octane of E 85,and will see a 25% loss of fuel economy.
This leaves you with only a 10% fuel cost advantage, which I think is not worth the price of modifying the carb jet,and the chance of damaging the engine if you do not get the jet change exactly right.
I suspect the mower engine would run good on E 10,if there is any price advantage to it.
