I don't know if there is any injunction preventing you from having a dose of poisonous water- but be aware that everything green (or red as mentioned earlier) may not be algae.

If you are truly in a mountainous, alpine enviroment, then my experience doesn't apply but if your climate in anyway matches that of Jordan, mt. then you could well be a candidate for the bacteria that is known in Canada as blue green algae. In Sask their have been cases up into the parkland regions where the climate is moister and cooler than the southern prairies.

Most times, it exists as single green particles in the water of varying concentrations, but as a bacteria, it has the ability to double in very few hrs. Also, under certain nutrient and temperature conditions it can produce toxins that are powerful liver destroying agents. Some times, but not always, this is accompanied by a color change to aquamarine from peasoup.

It is capable of killing large numbers of animals in a short time if they are forced to drink from the water. Cattle seem to have an aversion and will sometimes go without water to avoid drinking the poisonous water- not always- sometimes a cow will have to demonstrate Darwins theory.

This failure to drink can lead to significant losses without any animals dying.

We have never lost an animal to blue-gren algae( in about 100 yrs on this place) but neighbours have on a regular enough basis that everyone stays vigilant. Best be certain !
