Subject: At what height do grass and broadleaves hurt soybeans?

In other words, when do weeds start to steal moisture or nutrients from my soybean crop? Before this rain of 2+ inches I sprayed some fields for 2-4 inch tall grass to prevent possible moisture loss (I wasn't sure I'd get much rain or cooler weather). My observation was that soil was only dry in the top inch but was concerned the drying of the topsoil would accelerate quickly as the weeds grew. Curious if anyone has a standard which they use for post spraying of soybeans?
Thanks. Dan
