The ND compressors have a cover over the clutch so you can't tell by looking. Usually you can tell by the sound of the engine & looking at the digital tach. It will pull down about 10 RPM or so when the comp. kicks in, w/the engine at slow idle. If you have gauges you can tell, the low side goes down, high side up...if there's any charge at all...I'm not sure if the 50's are the same, but on the 9600 the temp. control switch was real cheesy, open contacts get dirty & lose connection.
