How much time to dig trench with backhoe

Subject: How much time to dig trench with backhoe



I was thinking of digging a main tile line in with a backhoe but wanted to know how long it would take. It is about 800ft and we would be going 5-6' deep and would want to step it half way for cave in safety. For those who have done it, how long would it take. I would also be interested in the time it would take to do it with a large excavator compared to a backhoe. Just a rough idea of how many feet you could dig in an hour and what kind of equipment you are using. We would be putting in 15" double wall tile and using a laser for checking grade. Thanks, JD

SE South Dakota/ SW Minnesota		1/2 time with an excavator

with a 680 case I used to dig about a 100 feet an hour, but that was an 8 ft deep trench. The first 5 ft go alot faster than the last 3

Wallis, TX		In the oil patch they figure around 1800' a day 4' deep but that's not to grade and not stepped.

West Central IL		Dug, pipe laid and backfilled about 11 to 13hours, only digging can be done in 9 hours or so.

Central Nebraska		We average 280-300 ft per hour digging a 48" deep trench with an excavator putting in non grade lines to pivots. Usually we step the trench about a foot for ease of access.
