| Yup an alternator can put out enough to turn out the idiot light but not enough to charge the battery. A glazed belt did that one time and cost me a car. Only because I was a helping hand jumping the car with the glazed belt and my car got hit in the process. That made me quit carrying jumper cables and volunteering to use them.
If you have a factory alternator, it would have come with the air conditioned cab, otherwise 4020 came with wimpy generators. The diesel came as 24 volts with a 10 amp generator, gas came as 12 volts with a 20 amp generator. Either required half a day or longer of running to make up for a cold start.
An open diode or two or three could cause the same symptoms of turning out the idiot light but not charging the battery and a faulty regulator could do that too. Often the idiot light was run by a relay getting power from the alternator stator, not much affected by open diodes.
