If you find a used shaft, have the area where the failure occurred magnafluxed, be sure they don't use anything that could leave an arc burn. Dye penetrant testing might work to locate any existing cracks as well. If you can't see any sort of tool mark or notch with a sharp radius where the dark area goes to the surface, (assuming that area was not damaged after the shaft failed) there was probably an existing crack that grew slowly until the material was unable to sustain the applied load. If you get a used shaft with no existing cracks or sharp notches in the surface, It would probably run a long time.
