Subject: New to me JD 8200 cruise control question.

68340

The owners mannual does not give me much information/help.

I was discing, 21 ft 1404 Krause.  It is what I had when I bought the 8200.

Anyway.

The book says to screw the cruise knob all the way to min.  Push the throttle all the way open.  OK.  Now I put it in gear and am running in 9th gear at about 4.2 mph.  I want to go to 4.7 mph.  10th gear gives me 5 mph as it min. speed.  Not the speed I want.  I go back to 9th.  I then have to screw the cruise control knob clockwise to increase rpm to get to 4.7 mph.

I don't see how this "cruise control" is a benefiting me.

What am I doing wrong?    or   Is the tractor not working correctly?  Thanks.

Useless feature. Only helpful if you are pulling a light draft load like a planter where you seldom need to shift gears.

SCNE
it's a throttle limeter. good for operations you want exact speed and don't want to manually set speed/rpm after every turn. just throw throttle all the way forward and know it is at the right speed.

I run red but don't think it is a "useless feature"

It has its place, we use it on the planter a good bit. Its pretty simple to set and use I think. I'm missing why .3mph is and issue while discing. I was doing some light discing a couple weeks ago at 8+mph and doing a good job. I was taught a disc did the best job at the fastest speed you could reasonably pull it, at least for what we wanted it to do.

Never use it. You also lose your "power bulge" hp by having it turned down any amount past the click. I just throttle back. Tractors run great, even in a hard pull, at 1700-1900 rpms.

Great feature. All you need to do is with the cruise knob off; place the throttle wide open in tenth gear then turn the knob counter-clockwise until you slow to your desired ground speed. We run a 9300, a 9330 and a 8420 at 1850 rpm . Saves alot of fuel with absolutely no power lost ,once you get use to driving at that rpm. We pull dirt pans, discs, v-rippers and planters. When we got our 9930 deere rep told me not to use them because the trans would not hold up . with the cruise off when it loads up the trans will just kick into neutral, with the cruise on you bypass that crap and you can kill the engine if you load it up to much. Don't get me wrong I don't like to kill an engine , but I hate when I'm loading a pan and all the sudden the tractor stops moving. BTW when that happened the first time I didn't know what happened.

If it controlled actual ground speed instead of engine RPM's I would agree with you. It is useless to me.

Do not use the cruise when pulling it hard!

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I use the cruise control on our 8310. Even in heavy tillage, I use the knob to reduce the engine RPM slightly. This reduces the noise dramatically. The 8310 is a good solid tractor but quite loud. This is with a complete muffler installed. I can't for the life of me understand why people replace the muffler with a straight pipe. Maybe not so bad on your Sunday afternoon Hot Rod but in a tractor I want it quiet.

I have an 8120 on a 12 row planter, it has plenty of power for that use so I use the cruise to reduce the engine speed for fuel savings. Maybe not much different than using the throttle but it works for me.

I use it all the time, set the mph you want in any given gear and that is what you get. how is that useless? I never use more than 1700 rpm except on the road anyhow so this works for me.

I put a 5" truck muffler on mine, bolts right on and is much quieter.

You set rpm, not mph, any engine lug and you are going slower than you intended, and slower than you are capable of.

The way my OM reads on an 8100, it has led me to believe that field cruise shouldn't be used for heavy loads. Have I misinterpreted that?

It's good for PTO work where you want to run at a certain RPM. It's just a throttle stop.

I don't see much lug as you put it, mph stays just about the same. planter doesn't mind anyhow, ammonia is controlled as well so how is this worthless?

slower than I am capable of? what does that mean?

I never turn mine off. I have never found a problem with full loads yet, including a scraper which will get it all.

If you have it on you are not loading the engine to it's full capability and are probably lueither lugging it or or babying it so much that it becomes "lazy". Diesels have to be "blown out" every once in a while or they get used to not being worked and soot up on the inside.

Ok, again I probably have the wrong interpretation but aren't the rpm's supposed to remain constant with field cruise? Like if you set the FC to 1800 rev's and you encounter a hill or a little harder pull, shouldn't the rpm remain relatively close to if not exactly 1800?

Thought it was kinda cool on the sprayer................till I got to the mud and pushed the throttle ahead and then stopped moving. If I could have got the tires to clean out I would have made it.............I think?

I wasn't impressed with it on the 8310 we had. AS others have said it's just a fancy throttle stop. I do like the one on our Beuhler Versatile 4wd. You set the engine rpms and it maintains that rpm but when the load increases the computer increase fuel to the engine to maintain that rpm then when load deacreases it backs the fuel off. Works great on light or heavy loads and really helps save on fuel as well as evens out the ground speed thru the field

You weren't "getting it all" unless you have field cruise turned off. Try it on a dyno sometime. These 8000's are giving out way more than rated.

First of all congrats on one of the finer tractors ever made. We had a 2wd 8200 and spent maybe 1k on it during the 9 years we had it.

The field cruise is not a big deal. I rarely used it. No different than throttling down manually. When discing, you will want at least 1700 rpms. With that small of a disk you wont be able to load the tractor anyway, so i would run 11th gear at least. When planting with a 12 row usually ran 1400-1500 rpm.
You'll have to take a pic of that beast so we can all appreciate it. Good luck.

I don't know. I just use it. I think the bottom rpm is around 1550 or something.. whatever I set it at is pretty much what it stays at anyway.
