Back in 1998, we ammoniated some fescue stubble. the crude protein was 11.1. In looking at the hay test,I see that we also had some fescue hay tested that was 9.4. That was too long ago for me to remember for sure when the fescue hay was baled.

The University of Missouri has some publications for Anhydrous Ammonia Treatment. If you can not find it, I will fax you the sheets that I have in my file folder.

I would think fescue stubble and wheat straw would be about the same.

Added before posting.

I found where we treated wheat straw in 1995. It had crude protein of 12.76 on the as-fed basis. 14.49 on the dry-matter basis. The same year ammoniated fescue was 13.79 and 15.4 respectively.

Thanks for the info, I have found some more documentation from several state universities that may help in my decision. I have also found an outfit called Haymaster Nutrition Injection Systems, where they have some bale prongs that inject substances into the wheat straw to make it a higher grade feed. I may look into that also. This is unharvested wheat that I am baling up. I had a person ask me if I was concerned with the wheat beards getting stuck in the mouths of my cows, and I guess I had not thought of that! We used to bale a lot of wheat hay, and sometimes we didnt get it swathed down until it was fully headed, and seems I remember the beards causing some problems, with the eyes of cows when they would bury their head into the bale end to get more hay, but dont remember having trouble with beards in the mouths, but it could probably be a concern. I have a feedwagon I could grind the hay, but rather not go to all that work, if I didnt have to.
Jim.
