Subject: JOhn Deere 7000 corn planter..... Marker arms will not alternate

Western NY
I have a John Deere 7000 conservation 6 row corn planter and the marker arms will not always alternate. 1 out of 20 tries it will alternate but I have no explanation why it will work when it does. Does anyone know how to fix this or what could be the problem?

Check the lift cylinder an linkage inside the right end of the bar for wear, mouse nests, and lack of lubrication. Make sure the pressure on the lift hose (if plumbed together with the lift) goes all the way to zero when down.

I'd pull the whole actuator out of the tube and clean it up. It can get so full of oil-caked dust that it refuses to operate. Make sure the spring is intact and that all parts slide back and forth as they should. Fix any oil leaks and completely clean out the tube. That should fix it.

IMPORTANT STEP:

Tie a rope or something to the other end BEFORE you pull anything out!!!

Definitely! When you unhook the cable to the opposite marker, tie something to it so you can pull it back through when you slide the actuator assembly back in. Saves several bad words.

Double pull that unit out-may be broken or weak spring. Not real fun job the first time-once you have done it pretty simple.

A section in operators manual covers markers and adjustment of hyd fitting in marker circuit, too much flow can cause your symptoms also. Have found "feathering" hyd lever helps.

Willing to bet there's a mouse nest in there. Don't what attracts them, but a I've seen it a few times before. The nest material keeps the arm from tripping and letting the arms alternate.

I fought that for 3 years, did everything mentioned above with no improvement. Pulled out the assembly and replaced the latches and springs and never messed up once this spring. Actually took it in to service department and operated on bench and it worked about 50%. There was nothing wrong or worn that was obvious. Best $200 in parts spent!

There were many mouse nests in my planter boom. So many they rusted a hole through the steel tube going to the marker. I figured it was cylinder seals, but found oil pooling in the boom when I opened up the end and dragged the mechanism out. So I used a long handled hoe to draw out a pile of about 30 years accumulation of mouse nests and coated the new bare steel pipe with roofing tar to slow the corrosion in the future. My problem was that even with the marker on a separate hose (a handy mod, gets the marker down faster than the planter at the beginning of a pass) it wouldn't lift.
