| There's an old saying that goes "you can't plant your corn too deep & you can't plant your beans too shallow" and over 35 yrs of farming I have found that to pretty well hold true within reason. I have gotten into the most trouble when I try to plant corn too shallow (1.5" or less) & beans too deep (1.5" or more). Only time I will plant beans deeper than that is when it's late in the season (June here) & it's dry, then I will chase moisture. Sooner than that I will plant them around 1.25" even if they are in dry dirt. I figure early if it doesn't rain it doesn't really matter how deep, or shallow, they are.
First year I drilled beans I pulled a roller behind the drill but just set the drill openers to cut a small V for the beans & let the roller push them down. Drill was an old wheat drill that just had rings to cover the seed. After that I ran a press wheel drill for years & set it about the same | |
