Hay Wilson in TX
Posted 7/19/2007 14:45 (#176190 - in reply to #175674)
Subject: It is a little damp.

Little River, TX
I have not cut hay for 6 weeks. the ground is so wet I would just cut deep ruts trying. If it does not rain for the remainder of the year we still will have an above average rain year. It all goes into being average. Two years of drought will bring us back to average moisture. Surprised

Here, Vet's tend to say "Don't Feed Alfalfa" to horses. The Blister Beetle you know. Here if a horse gets on the RR tracks and killed, the Vet will say it was the Blister Beetles killed the horse if it had been fed alfalfa.

I have yet to meet a Texas Veterinarian who knows the live cycle of the BUG and has not a clue that they come in different varieties with different toxicity.

So I am on reasonably firm ground recommending my horse owning hay customers buy coastal bermudagrass. Exception being horses in daily work outs, and or wet mares. In truth my bermudagrass hay is >55% TDN. It would be ok except they like to open a sack and feed cubes or sweet feed.
