Jim, there are several problems with using barbed wire as part of an electric fence. Lightning is the least of it. If lighting hits the fence, it will follow it back to the fencer. If lightning strikes the ground near the fence, it will follow the ground back to the fencer. If you know it will happen, you can help prevent damage. Most companies that specialize in electric fence sell lightning arrestors. They are cheap insurance.

The biggest problem with using barbed wire as part of an electric fence is the danger of entaglement. If clothing becomes caught on a barb, you could get shocked until you were able to free yourself. For an adult, it isn't pleasant, for a child, it could kill them. There have been many cases were it has happened.

Don't take the chance, a life isn't worth it.
