I would suggest finding a hula-hoop, or constructing a facsmile from sprayer hose.  Calculate the area (pi times radius squared) of the hoop in square feet.   Throw hoop randomly into the field.   Count plants inside hoop.  Take that number divided by the area of the hoop times 43560 to get plants per acre.   It takes several tosses to achieve a reasonably accurate population count for the field.  It will work as long as your rows are significantly narrower then the diameter of the hoop.
