Subject: RE: bunker vs bag, which is most cost effective?

The bags are pretty popular here. Almost all the 50-60 cow dairies use either wrapped baleage or bags. We generally do one or two bags a year of corn silage for feeder cattle. I think the reduction in DM loss alone pays for the bag over the traditional/non covered, bunkers around here. Quality is also excellent. The main problem with the bags is the plastic disposal, and mud under the bags. A bag on concrete or Asphalt would be ideal. When you get the plastic pushed down in the mud it is a royal pain to get cleaned up. I'm sure you know there are several different bag sizes and sizes of machines available. Is there a contractor in your area that could fill a couple bags for you to try?
