My suggestions:

Triticale is allelopathic to corn, so it should be killed ASAP w/ herbicides if not already. For future reference, if this crop sequence is 'normal' for you, then try to spray out the triticale as far in advance of corn planting as possible.

In my experience, I'd say the row cleaners were moving far too much stubble and soil. Yes, getting some of the material out of the way will reduce allelopathy. However, moving 100% of the residue out of the row can be problematic if you would happen to get a pounding rain (erosion, crusting). Also, corn's crown roots sometimes have trouble establishing if the soil is too warm and dry -- so moving all the residue will worsen this.

I generally prefer to move only 30% to 50% of the residue from the row. Hairpinning can be alleviated by having the opener blades sharp, and by limiting blade flex.

I see no crusting in the photos, Jim.
