Subject: First attempt at no-till

Sunnyside, WA
Myself and another Agtalk member got interested enough reading posts that we figured we had to try a little no till with just my 8 row 7300 planter equipped with Dawn trash wheels and Keeton seed firmers to see if we could actually no till into triticale stubble that had been taken for silage. Seems like the trash wheels had to be run about 1.5 to 1.75 inches deep to move enough stubble to not hairpin the seed trench. At 5 mph, there seemed to be a lot of dirt and root balls flying. Took all the pressure off the closing wheels as there was plenty of moisture. Corn is already spiking through after 5 days, but its been 100 the last three days.

Questions: were we moving too much residue or is this what a close up looks like in no till wheat? Seem like the trash wheels were really working the ground, but we kept adjusting them and this seemed like the best results. It also took very little down pressure as we had the springs on the 1, 2, or 3 setting and it seemed to make no different at all. The seed boxes were pretty much empty and there was no other weight added and it penetrated quite well for a 3pt planter.

How much would the curvetine closing system help in this situation? One or two per row?
