Subject: What a 'left leaning' Iowa paper had to say . . .

. . . on the issue today.  From the Storm Lake Times:

Grappling with girls

A female wrestler from Cedar Falls made it to the state wrestling tournament. In the first round, the girl’s male opponent from Linn-Mar forfeited rather than taking on the girl. The boy, who was home-schooled, said his religious beliefs did not allow him to wrestle a girl because the sport can be combative and violent. The boy does not believe girls should be treated that way, even in sport.

That’s why girls should not be allowed to wrestle boys.

Let girls wrestle girls and boys wrestle boys. Volleyball is not offered to boys as a high school sport. We would not allow a boy to invade a girls’ game. Why let a girl play football or wrestle?

Taken at his word, we must respect the Linn-Mar boy’s code of values. But the boy he beat to make it to state might well have wanted to wrestle the girl in hopes of a state title or just a trip to Des Moines. The forfeit was not fair to the boy who lost in the qualifying district meet.

The way things are set up, the state wrestling tournament was not fair to the female wrestler, to the male wrestler whose religious beliefs apparently would be violated, or to other wrestlers who were left behind.

Co-ed sports belong in the intramural realm. If there is enough interest in wrestling for girls, let the Iowa Girls Athletic Union start the sport statewide.

Otherwise, forget about girls wrestling boys.
