Subject: Semi Truck License Cost

Central Illinois
In Illinois it costs for a not for hire Farm Semi (80,000 lbs) $1,490 per year just for the license. (Not including DOT, UCC, inspections, etc.) It is much more expensive for a for hire license.

I am looking at possibly adding an extra truck during fall harvest, but I am having trouble justifying paying the license (I am very fee adverse) just for limited mileage in the fall.

What does it cost in other states to license a similar truck (80,000 lbs) ?

The ill base plate will run twice that and then you will have high insurance costs and you will need your own authority to haul for hire or else lease your truck to someone who has one. We have had Otr trucks for 20 years and after march our last truck will be put up for sale the work comp in Il alone and the hassle just isn't worth it for us anymore.

I have no wishes or desire to go into the custom trucking business. I was just curious what the fees in other states are for farmers hauling their own grain.

I know we live in Illinois where our state motto should be "the land of fees and tax increases" because our elected officials can't stop spending.

Mine was around $350 in Ohio 80,000 lbs. I think the trailer is just $50? No DOT crap either, no inspections, no log, no medical card, no CDL just keep it within 150 miles.

$619 for semi farm tag and $46.50 per trailer in Kansas. This is for 2000 model truck. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Kansas is only based on weight and not age of truck.

In Texas you can only licence for 65k but then it depends on the year of the truck . On a 96 I pay $400 . They can only screw the American farmer for so long before we have to quit . I don't pay anything compared to alot of you guys . What are your trailer tags ?

I think the key is how old you tractor is.......The newer, the more it costs. What year is you power unit?
We look reasonable here in our state it seems in comparison to others.Im thinking my 93 volvo farm plate is like 197 bucks Under (7000 miles annually and file with the IRS)and 20$ on the hopper trailer. A commecial semi the same year is a 1000$ more at least. The newer, the worse it will be.

NW Iowa
I only use mine in the fall and here's what works for that in Iowa. When I renew for the year in January, I only license them for the minimum tonnage (6 Ton, $100/yr) since they just sit in the shed. Then just before harvest I go in and raise the tonnage to the max which is pro-rated for just the remaining portion of the year. Works out to less than $300/yr. I also only carry comp/collision insurance during harvest and drop it to just comprehensive for the other 10+ months. License and insurance total of less than $350/yr. I don't know if you're able to do this in IL, but worth finding out.

What is the going rate for a four to six week rental? I thought it was around $1,500 but I may be wrong. I don't mind paying for a tractor and trailer, but I just absolutely hate getting fleeced by my state for licenses and fees if I am only going to put a couple thousand miles on the truck.

I had no idea we were this much more expensive on farm plates! You guys are buying 80000lbs plates for what it would cost us here for a 2 ton truck! Our state is truly a money pit, this is BS.

Southern Lower Michigan
In Michigan $120 for tractor (goes by actual weight of tractor) and $2-300 for lifetime trailer plate.(again based on actual weight of trailer). dosen't matter how much you haul.
This for FARM plating only.

Correct, I had mentioned that in another thread awhile back, but omitted that this time...Ends up being about $22/ton for plates for the truck (32 ton) and $30 for the trailer...plus $0.50 each if you mail the registration :)

I sure don't want to run a total on mine, 80,000 lbs. semi plates are just under $2300 here in Indiana. Farm plates are half that or were. Find out here in a couple of weeks.

Think an 80K limited tag in Ky is around $750.  Don't remember the exact number but that is close.  Have a dump truck and a 55K for it is around $350.

Last time I tagged my semi (07') I think it was $550.00 for farm with 150 mile restriction. I only run within 10 miles of my home and on country roads so I have'nt even bothered for several years. All my grain is picked up at the farm by the elevator.

Figure on $3,000 to lease a truck for harvest, plus a few hundred for insurance. You can't hardly license and insure a truck for the whole year for that. Been working well for us.

Has anyone tried to license your truck and trailer out of state with one of those outfits that gets you a PO box in a low fee state and forwards your mail to the state you live in? I live in Illinois and have considered doing that just wondered how much the local brass would give me heat.
