Subject: RE: Trimble's statements about WAAS

Calgary, AB, Canada
Interesting conversation.... I'll throw in some food for thought.

WAAS cannot get down to XP/HP accuracy with it's current message structure. It is based on a precision of 0.125M message structure while the high accuracy messages such as MRTCA have a precision capability of 0.004M. These high accuracy messages are required if you are to try and get into the 10cm, 2 Sigma range. WAAS cannot get there. While WAAS has improved over the years... there are certain barriers that it cannot get through with its current precision.

There are new signals in testing that are capable of high accuracy in a Precise Point Positioning capable receiver, that will be probably be free... but it's not WAAS.

I have to agree with the previous posters, that while adequate for some applications, the very structure and make-up of the WAAS correction, cannot give the consistant accuracy and repeatbilty of the Phase correction signals. This is not to say that WAAS is not perfectly suitable for many applications. If it works good enough for your application, and you're happy with it great. By the nature of GPS.. pass to pass accuracy claims are nothing but smoke and mirrors, and are very difficult to quantify.
