The orthman system works fine, but there are a few concerns for most producers. Number one, cost. Number two, what if I need it on more than one implement. Expensive to have two, difficult to move from machine to machine. iGuide is just a bracket, reciever, cable, and most importantly, software.
My real concern is why you paid in advance for test equipment.

You are not comparing apples to apples when looking at the price and required equipment for the Orthman and iGuide systems. As you specifically said, the Orthman system is active while the iGuide is passive. However, I will address a couple of points in your invalid comparison. First, seeing that you say the Orthman system is difficult to move from machine to machine, I assume that you have done so? I have not done so but from looking over the finished installation of the system on a planter, I do not believe it is as difficult as you make it sound. Second, of course the costs are going to be different, they're two completely different systems. Do you expect the cost of a full hardware package to compete with that of a "bracket, receiver, cable, and software." I am confident that John Deere will release their own version of active implement steering and I'm sure you will fully support it seeing that you're an AMS Specialist for a John Deere dealer.

Also, until we work out implement guidance completely, if you aren't in rather level ground, it's not worth it for now.

Will you clarify this statement?
