Subject: RE: We have those.

Tuscarora, MD
We use insecticide for darkling beetles, but only if we see them. We rarely have to treat for that. On the Eastern Shore of Maryland it is a bigger problem for some reason. Maybe it's a density issue. As far as chlorine, we try to keep the water at 6.2 to 6.4 pH. We previously used manifold chlorinaters in the water line. They used chlorine pills and were not very accurate and a pain to keep full. We now have a "Verox" system that injects sulfuric acid and a buffering agent to form Chlorine dioxide. It is very accurate and virtually hands off. It is commonly used in the food service industry for water sanitation. We also have a water softener, nitrate removal system, and black light. Probably overkill, but they kept making us add systems because they didn't know what was causing the asper. Come to find out the shavings had high asper counts on the truck and the barn environment made it worse. To add insult, everytime we tilled or stirred the litter in the brooder the colonies would absolutley explode. We've been using paper for about 5 or 6 flocks now and had great success. It is much more absorbant and very dry. We haven't had asper since.
