You could check your tiller counts next year when you would normally put on the first application.  I shoot for ~600 good tillers per square yard.  Over 750 is too many.  If you are on the high side when you do your counts, you could cut back on the 1st application to 30 units or so just to try to keep what you've got.  I would make tiller counts to determine my N rate if it is as thick as you say.
