Subject: I think you're right Massey

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
I have 7 trucks with the vortec 5.7. The ignition switch from '95-'98 interior (up to '99 for tahoes and suburbans) was a real bear to install. You don't have to pull the steering wheel or the lock cylinder though (where the key slides in). It is one tedious SOB to install. The problem is getting the plastic cover off from around the actual lock cylinder where the key goes in. The bottom is easy, but the top is difficult because it won't slide over the lock cylinder cylinder. The switch is actually just under that. It's expensive. Seems like it was about $110 bucks from Napa. It's NAPA part # KS 6162. My trucks did exactly what you say, they start, then shut right off. Those ignition switches have SEVERAL contactors in them. What happens is the RUN contactor wears out, but the start contactor is good. I'm not saying that the fuel pump isn't the problem, but it sounds more like a keyswitch to me. If the fuel pump is bad on the old votec 350s, it usually only runs bad when you accelerate, not when it's idling. Sounds like yours won't even idle for a few tries. I'm betting on the switch. Have fun with it, its a nuisance. Let us know what happens.
