Good work, Greg. One thing I would like to point out, it will be hard to find a diesel engine small enough to be efficient without going to an off brand which may be hard to find parts for. I think an older propane engine such as a 300 Ford, maybe a 292 Chevy or something similar will be better matched to the load than a popular diesel such as the Deere, and maybe narrow the efficiency gap somewhat since it will be pulling much closer to its peak efficiency. Also, the propane engine would probably take less for oil and filters. I would go with a good used propane engine for something like this.

Also, if you would figure interest on the money saved by buying the less expensive engine would probably about equal the fuel savings of the diesel, or maybe a little more.
