A propane engine will burn around twice as much as a diesel, at least the new modern diesels. However, this is assuming that you are loading both engines correctly. I have seen far too many instances where a much oversized engine is used and it is operating at too light of load to be efficient. Find out what horsepower you actually need, then size the engine to it, either fuel choice will be more efficient if you do this.

I think propane is overlooked too often as a fuel in the irrigation engine market. You should be able to get even a new propane for less than half of a diesel, and used ones are easy to find as well. They are cheaper to overhaul than a diesel, and in many cases operate more cheaply when all things are considered.

How many gpm are you pumping, and at what pressure?
