8640 Deere has two 6V batteries

I can see what you are saying when converting an Allis WD 45 from 6 volt to 12 volt. You can use the 6 volt starter, but make sure if the starter kicks out, you let it quit spinning before engaging the starter. If not, you will break the nose of the starter off. In this case of the 8640, two 6 volt battries in series equal 12 volts. Two 12 volts in parallel, equal 12 volts, so the starter voltage is not affected. You will get more cranking amps from the two 12 volts. As far as battery cables go, I would run at least 1/0 welding cable or even 2/0. The distance from the front of the tractor to the starter will cause some voltagle drop.
