Subject: RE: Update on Raven 440/AL PF3000 & GPS1000+

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
Glad to see you got this going. This is a fairly common scenario. With all the emphasis on the Insight, I tend to forget about using a PF3000 or PF Advantage in this way.

For those who are not following the marriage of these two devices, here is what is happening: The Raven is still running the application. It is running the Nh3 bar or sprayer as it would if it were operating alone. The PF3000 is at times acting like a recording device, at other times it acts as an input to the desired rate.

In this setup, the Raven 440 is working with the PF3000, Since the Raven is connected to the PF3000 via a serial (computer type cable) cable, communication can take place betweeen the two devices. The Raven "tells" the PF3000 what it is doing - flow rate etc.). Thus the PF3000 can calculate the application rate, total product, acres etc. Because of this information, the PF3000 can record/map the applied information for the field. In addition, the PF3000 can send "new" application rates to the Raven. These new rates can either be from operator input or from a VR file in the PF3000.

By using the LOAD concept an application can be split up into batches. We used to switch loads for each NH3 tank or each manure trip. This allowed us to get a nice summary for the individual NH3 tanks or manure loads.

The GPS that Ron refers to has a 9 Pin connector which can be fed into the PF3000 so it knows its location and also a simulated radar output which connects to the normal Raven speed input port for speed.

This GPS is nicely suited for this situation since it comes properly configured and has the two output cables. It is a Smart Antenna meaning the Receiver is in the antenna thus reducing cab clutter. The 9 Pin cable that goes between the PF's Port 3 and the Raven Port is somewhat special. An ordinary cable from Radio Shack will probably not work since a couple of pins need to be tied together.

It is also necessary to swap the firmware in the PF3000 to the App Rate/Site firmware. The Harvest/Site firmware cannot work with the Raven. The Raven must also be set to: BAUD 9600, Trigger 1, Unit Sec and Data Logger ON.

There are many combinations of Ag Leader Products, Raven products and other GPS units that can be married together is a similar fashion.

In the case of the Insight, it is necessary to use the Serial Application Rate Module to setup this type of arrangement.
