Northwest Ohio

I started noticing a rattle in the steering column, is there something I can oil or grease.  Really notice it wheel you are turning the wheel driving in a driveway, kinda feels like its loose.  I know there is a fix I remember hearing about it a couple of years ago but forget what it was now.

Thanks for the help.

central - east central Minnesota -
If it's still under warrenty, it's a free REPLACEMENT parts/labor warrenty. Even if it's out of warrenty - they should fix it for free. Take it to the next level if the dealer will not help, and / or try different dealers.

Replace steering drive line. I believe dealer charged about 180.00. A few months later had to replace steering gear box about 600.00.

It is a knocking noise from the intermediate steering shaft in the engine compartment. It is a common issue for years on these trucks.
Good luck getting it warrantied on a 6 year old truck.
It can be lubed and the noise goes away for a time.

Steering column. Almost all of them did this. It was a new mandated saftey thing. Lubing them is ok, but I don't know how you can do it without taking out dash. So you might as well replace it. My 02 does it, but it's not bad enough for me to take it out yet.

My wife's 2002 Yukon does the same thing. When do you know it is time to replace it? I can feel/hear it but it does not seam too bad yet. Yukon has about a hundered ten thousand on it.

Learn to live with it. Had an '04 2500 that did it under warranty (<30k) - was replaced with "updated" shaft. Lasted about as long before it did it too. Just got used to it when turning on rough terrain.

Had an 06 silverado 1500 that did it after 25k miles but traded it in before something else went wrong on that lemon. After replacing one wheel bearing at 15k and the other at about 30k and finally the transmission at 35k, and not to mention a bunch of electrical sh*t, i was ready to get rid of it. Needless to say i now drive a Ford.

Sorry im not much help but i needed to vent haha

go to dieselplace.com and do a search. will tell you what to do. Its a easy fix and cheap. takes about 5 min to pull it out and about 15 to fix it. Need to pull it out and then pull apart. it will ruin a couple of the grooves but then can be fixed back up with a file. I then coated it with red rvt silicon and reassembled. leave it overnight and it will more than likely be fixed. the bearing on the bottom of the column can be a issue too but a hose clamp or muffler clamp can fix that too. just a plastic bearing that gets loose

gm makes a kit to grease it. i few shots every oil change and most of the thump goes away. some of them had a problem with a rattle at about 35 mph coming from the front, but that was an issue with the rubber bushing on the shocks.

All you have to do is pull the steering shaft off of the gearbox. 13mm I think. Slide the shaft in & out a couple times and reinstall. It will take you 5 minutes and it will be cured for about 10,000 miles. You only need to remove one bolt.

Plus add the white grease they make for this and it will go away for another 20-25 K miles.

Just the intermediate steering shaft with an aftemarket one like a Dorman. Then the problem is solved. Who wants to tear it apart and lube it every 10k miles?
