Eastern Montana
We calve April-May, most of the neighbors start in March some in February. We graze all winter with just a protien supplement. The young cows (2's & 3's) may get a little hay in March if snow conditions warant it. The older cows don't get hay unless the grass is covered with snow too hard for them to graze in. Ccalves are weaned in mid October. Calving early to have bragging rights on who has the heaviest calves in the fall comes with a high price. Rod Heitschmidt who used to be at the Ft. Keogh ag research station said the most economically profitable herd of cattle at the station were their June calvers because they didn't need the added inputs, no hay no supplement most winters. Calves were weaned in October.
