Subject: Why do you calve when you do?

Western Nebraska
Reading through several of the posts down the page I started to wonder why people calve when they do. We have changed our calving date mainly because of a desire to move it away from bad weather. I have heard people say many times that they have to calve in the winter for various reasons. One that keeps cropping up is that they want an 5-6-700 lb calf in October or November. Yet, if you look at historical charts that is the lowest point of the calf market year in and year out. Selling a weanling through October and November is like selling grain at harvest.

I am not really looking to change anyone's calving date, but I am just curious if many people have sat down and really thought through why they calve when they do or is it more of a tradition thing?
