I have not seen or used the 500,but the description that you gave matches the Trimble Field Manager Display's record keeping capabilities.  I doubt that they would have better data logging in the 500 than they do in the more expensive FMD.  Data logging is the glaring weak point in Trimble's systems right now.  I have complained about this to every Trimble higher up I could find, but so far it has not done any good.  The AgLeader InSight is a far more powerful data logger than any of the Trimble systems.  The Trimble will only log one product per field/event.  It logs in a shape file.  Essentially all you get from that shape file is a coverage map.  We will strongly look at using the InSight on the next autosteer system we buy.
