There is no problem with going back & forward between v3.x & v4.x SCM firmware on the EZ-Steer controller. As tedbear points out, v4.x is not an upgrade - it is a different version built specifically for the EZ-Guide 500. At some point in the future (not sure when), the 2 versions will be "combined" so that you will be able to use the same EZ-Steer f/w version with either EZG+ or EZG500.
